To collect hyperlocal granular air quality readings in select EIEC neighborhoods across the city of Chicago. Target locations for this pilot include Pilsen, Little Village, and the Southeast side of Chicago. Monitoring will run throughout 2025 with data being accessible on a monthly basis. The goal is to identify where the need for electrification is greatest and where to prioritize investments to improve public health and quality of life.
The ComEd air quality pilot is closely tied to a broader UIC and CDPH monitoring effort, and so pilot-specific objectives are still being clarified. Key next steps include:
The mobile monitoring phase has concluded, with findings to be shared with community partners on June 27. Community engagement is underway to confirm final sensor placements based on EPA criteria and prior data, followed by training residents and partners on PurpleAir installations and Clarity sensor deployment. Data QA/QC, analysis, and visualization development are in progress.
