To assess and demonstrate the viability of implementing vehicle-to-grid technology with electric school buses (ESBs) and showcase the technology’s potential to leverage electric school buses (ESB) as viable energy storage sources while achieving balance on the grid.
Participant Characteristics
Three school districts (River Trails, Troy, and Waconda) participated in this pilot between June 2025 – October 2025. Each school district had a single bidirectional charging station for their ESB.
Pilot Status
The pilot has concluded, and an Executive Summary is available here.
Pilot Outcomes
The pilot successfully demonstrated that ESBs can reliably provide V2G grid services without disrupting transportation operations, particularly during periods when buses are idle (e.g., summer). However, scaling V2G will require addressing operational constraints, infrastructure readiness, financial uncertainty and equity gaps.
